Reasons for starting a blog about your life

When you’ve asked yourself the question ‘Can I blog about my life?’, it’s likely you’ve had some idea in your mind of what you want your blog to be like.

Think about that idea, because what we need to do now is identify which of the following two categories your blog about your life is going to fall into.

It’s really important to make this distinction because everything you do from this point on needs to be directed towards the outcome you want – and how you do that will make a huge difference to the success (or lack of success) of your blog.

You need to know whether the reason for starting a blog about your life is to create a website that attracts a large audience OR purely for your own satisfaction.

It could be somewhere in between – for example you could write a blog about your life directed towards a small group, such as family members living abroad – but essentially you need to know where you are on this spectrum before we go any further.

Writing a blog about your life for an audience vs for yourself

This is fairly self explanatory but it’s incredibly important!

Writing a blog about your own life

If you’re writing a blog about your life for yourself, or for a small group, you can basically do whatever you like! You have complete freedom to write as you please and structure your blog however you like.

You should still follow my simple step by step guide to starting a blog, to make sure your blog works properly – but in terms of your content, you’re not restricted in any way.

However, if you want to blog about your life AND attract large numbers of readers to your site (perhaps so that you can make money with your blog through advertising or affiliate marketing), then there are certain things you need to bear in mind right from the very beginning.

How to write a blog about your life that gets lots of visitors

If you want to write a blog about your life that gets lots of visitors, there are several key things you need to think about.

And bear in mind that if you want to make a blog about your life that makes money, you’re almost certainly going to need lots of visitors to your site.

The cost of setting up your blog on Wix vs WordPress

And the brutal truth is this – if you just randomly blog about your life, with no real thought towards how to help your readers or how to get your content to show up in google searches, you’re very unlikely to get lots of visitors to your site.

If you want to make a blog about your life that gets lots of visitors (or if you want to make a blog about your life that makes money – it’s the same thing initially), the first thing you need to think about is WHAT you’re going to blog about.

Yes, you want to blog about your life – but what in particular is it about your life that you want to write about, and why are people going to want to read it?

Can I write a blog about my life… that shows up in google searches?

When you’re considering what aspect of your life you’re going to blog about, you should initially think about whether or not your potential readers could find your blog posts when they run a google search.

Google searches (and other search engines) are an essential way for potential readers to discover your blog. While you can get viewers to your blog from other sources – maybe you already have a large social media audience with whom you can share your posts – it’s essential to think about how you can show up in google searches too.

For example, if you write a post about what you ate for breakfast for a month – how is anyone going to get to that from a google search? Is anyone really going to enter ‘what to eat for breakfast for a month’ into a google search?

Alternatively, if you write a post about your favorite makeup products, is anyone ever going to find that amongst the huge volume of well established beauty blogs and online magazines out there?

Writing a blog about your life

Now, I’m not saying that you shouldn’t write about those things – there’s nothing wrong with those post ideas as such, they could actually be pretty interesting and helpful. My point is that they might be helpful and interesting posts that no-one ever gets to see.

So you can see how it might be tricky to get lots of viewers to your blog if you just write very general random posts about your life.

Blogs like that can succeed, but you’ll find that the majority are run by people who are already very well known, or by people who started doing this years ago and now have LOTS of content on their blogs.

BUT, what if you ‘niched down’ a little and focused on a certain aspect of your life?

Writing in a particular niche

A ‘niche’ is simply the subject you’re writing your blog about.

So you’ll find blogs in the ‘fitness niche’, ‘beauty niche’, ‘entertainment niche’ and so on.

Within those niches, you’ll find sub-niches.

Within the fitness niche for example, you’ll find the yoga niche and the cycling niche.

But then you can ‘niche down’ even further. Within the yoga niche you’ve got niches for each particular type of yoga, and yoga for pregnancy, yoga for kids etc.

When you’re asking the question ‘Can I start a blog about my life?’ AND you want to get lots of visitors to your site, I highly recommend taking this approach of niching down.

‘Niching down’

Why do I recommend this approach of niching down?

Two reasons – because you will find less competition in google searches, and because you can attract a community of regular visitors to your site, who are really interested in your sub-niche i.e. the aspect of your life that you are blogging about.

How to create a post or page with WordPress Block Editor

Let’s demonstrate with an example…

Say you’re someone asking yourself the question ‘Can I start a blog about my life?’ and you happen to be a parent. You could niche down from your life in general into the parenting niche, and write about parenting and your life as a parent.

Even better, what if you happen to be a parent of twins? Well then you can niche down even further and write a blog about your life from the perspective of a parent of twins – that’s an excellent niche for your blog!

You can now write posts that have a higher chance of showing up on page one of a google search, because there’s a more limited amount of competition, but you’ve still chosen a topic that plenty of people are interested in and searching for.

So you can now start to write helpful and interesting posts about your life – and maybe some are about your own experiences and quite personal in that respect, but some are also posts like ‘How to stop twins arguing’, which you write from the perspective of a parent of twins but with the objective of creating a helpful post with a high search volume.

This approach means you have a great chance of getting lots of visitors to your blog about your life!

So now just have a think about how you could apply this approach to your own life.

Are you someone who loves to cook? Then you have a blog about your life in which you focus on food. Then take that even further – is there a particular type of food you love to cook? Could you niche down further into vegan food, or meals for large families, or eating on a budget?

Or do you have a passion for beauty? Great, you can write a blog about your life which focuses on that. But you know that there are literally thousands of beauty blogs and on-line magazines – how is anyone ever going to come across yours?

Well, maybe you love to buy only ethically produced beauty products. Or you have really pale skin and love to find makeup products that suit pale complexions. Or you only ever spend up to $10 on any beauty product!

You get the idea!

Side note – I really like that last idea of a whole beauty blog where every product mentioned costs less than $10. I may steal it!!

Just one point to make as a little caveat here! Make sure you don’t niche down so far that hardly anyone is going to have an interest in the subject. Lots of people have an interest in knitting, but an interest in knitting booties for kitties? Maybe not so much.
